The kiss of death.
This astonishing sculpture forms part of Barcelona’s Poblenou Cemetery. The Kiss of Death (El Petó de la Mort in Catalan and El beso de la muerte in Spanish) dates back to 1930. A winged skeleton bestows a kiss on the lips of a handsome young man: is it ecstasy on his face or resignation? Little wonder the sculpture elicits strong and varying responses from whoever gazes upon it.

My favorite?
The one I made for my friend Amanda:
Her Serene Holiness the Amanda of the Ramirez’s, Imperial Empress of All That is Tiny, Czarina of the Treebound Realms, Protector of the High Branches, Consort of His Supreme Highness King Jesus Christ Alex Patrick Oliver, Mother Superior of the Seedlings, Designator of That Which is Good, She Who is Without a Nationality, Princess of the Tree We Annexed That One Time, and Unbelievably Holy Pagan Goddess of Small Trees
She’s tiny, in case you were unaware.
The Unicorn in Captivity. South Netherlands, 1495-1505. Wool warp with wool, silk, silver, and gilt wefts.
Seen this! There is a whole room of tapestries that are known as “The Unicorn Tapestries” in the Cloisters branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan!
